New Merseyrail trains fully accessible for disabled travellers

Merseyrail’s new fleet of trains are set to be more accessible for disabled travellers with the introduction of an automatic ramp.

The improved fleet, designed by Swiss manufacturer Stadler, is replacing the current 40-year-old Merseyrail trains. They are the first in the country to feature a sliding step which meets the platform, allowing every passenger to board unaided.

Travellers were recently able to see one of the new ‘state of the art’ trains up close at Southport station.

Gemma Anderson, who suffers from brittle bone disease, attended the event.   She said: “I think these new ramps are incredible. Every rail company should put these systems in place. To get on and off with ease was amazing.”

Gemma uses a high-powered wheelchair and says she is more likely to use Merseyrail trains because of the sliding step. “I know a lot of people with disabilities who have had bad experiences getting stuck on trains and waiting for assistance.”

Whilst Gemma believes the new trains are a step in the right direction, she thinks more could have been done: “I wish they included disabled toilets. Other than that, the new trains are incredible. That’s the only downside.”
